Mocktails with Peter Madrigal
For this week’s read, I am going to talk mocktails! As discussed in one of my previous posts, COVID-19 has really hit people hard with the drinking. Either they are drinking too much, or have completely stopped. I’m somewhat in the middle these days, I’ll admit it’s been a rough year for us all. Sometimes I make mocktails or drink my favorite non-alcoholic wine (the brand is called FRE), and sometimes I don’t. So, as I planned to write this post I was thinking, “what would my readers want to know and where could I find the BEST mocktail recipes.” Well, look no further! I called Peter Madrigal, manager of Sur in west Hollywood, the best bartender known to man, a star on the hit show Vanderpump Rules, and someone who saved my ass one fine day.
How I met Peter is actually a funny story in itself. I was in Los Angeles for the launch of my Canadian brand, Marianna Naturals, and we were hosting a big (yet socially distanced) soiree at the Le Peer hotel in West Hollywood. My booked bartender completely canceled on me (what a dick move, he knew about the event for a month), and I woke up to his canceling messages (at 3 am… wonder what he was doing up when he had work the next day! go figure) and went into complete full-on anxiety attack, panic mode. I thought, how the hell am I going to get a bartender on such short notice, during COVID, in LA when half the city has fled since the shutdown!!!! I messaged Peter on Instagram and he called me immediately and offered to help me find a bartender. After a few failed attempts, he called me back and offered just to do it for me himself. Wow! I thought, God is good! Not only did Peter come set up the bar, he went and got all the stuff the previous bartender left out of the recipes, which he totally didn’t have to do. It was so nice, and completely calmed my anxiety. Needless to say, he was the hit of the event.
Every girl swooned over him, and he was so gracious taking photos for everyone. He is a real class act, and I will forever be thankful. I still need to send him a big box of Beauty Kitchen products as a thank you, I bet you didn’t know he is a skincare junkie too!! When I called Peter for his best mocktail concoctions, he replied quickly (again so nice) and gave me this list!
Mocktails with Peter Madrigal
Standard Raspberry Mojito:
-Muddle 3 raspberries, 3 limes, and a handful of mint together in a tall glass. Use a teaspoon of simple syrup for sweetness and to make muddling easier.
-Pour ice over.
-Fill with 1/2 water, 1/2 sparkling water.
-Shake with a shaker. If a shaker is unavailable, use a spoon to mix everything together by dragging up the fruit of the bottom of the glass.
-Serve with a straw otherwise mint will get all over in your mouth! Enjoy!
Avocado Peterrita:
-Muddle 1 lemon wedge, 1 orange wedge, 3 lime wedges together with a quarter of an avocado in a shaker glass. Use a teaspoon of simple syrup for sweetness and to make muddling easier.
-Pour ice over the mixture Along with water.
-Shake and strain over ice in a rocks glass.
-Garnish with a lime wheel.
-Enjoy with a straw!
Strawberry “Daiquiri”:
-Blend strawberries together with a banana, lemon wedge (no rind), water, and a teaspoon of simple syrup for sweetness.
-Pour into a tall glass and top with a little sparkling water.
