I’ve previously shared here on the blog about my love of collagen. There are so many reasons to take collagen — hair, skin, nails, the list goes on! But as I have gotten older, I’ve started taking it very seriously. Oral collagen supplements have been shown to improve skin hydration and elasticity for older people, aka me, lol. They also help to reduce wrinkles because the collagen plumps your skin and makes it more supple. So obviously there are all these beauty reasons for taking collagen, but there is actually so much more to the health aspect as well. Here are some non-cosmetic reasons to take collagen!
Collagen is a type of protein that plays an important role in building and supporting many tissues, from bones and cartilage to skin, hair, eyes, and the digestive system, and a great source of protein. Because of this, collagen also helps reduce joint and muscle pain and can alleviate joint pain after exercise. I love drinking a bottle of Liquid Biocell® Life in the sauna at Drop Sauna after my HOTWORX cycle classes. It also helps my stomach, and I love that. Everyone who knows me knows that I have major stomach issues. In inflammatory digestive conditions, such as irritable bowel disease (IBD), there is a “gut healing” theory about collagen, and I’ve definitely seen an improvement in my gut health since using it.
Everyone is using collagen. Every celebrity client I have is a collagen junkie, and Kourtney Kardashian preaches collagen all the time and looks fantastic! However, you need to know that since collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, when pollutants in the water, air, and food deplete our collagen storehouse, replenishment is vital. Most collagen supplements come from the bones, skin, and connective tissue of animals, including cattle, fish, horses, pigs, or rabbits. Collagen has been a somewhat hot topic for vegans, and I make sure to choose my collagen very wisely. This brand of collagen, Modēre, is very detailed on how they source their collagen, so I wanted to share that here for all my Vegans out there!
Here is a note from this company’s CEO/Founder:
“There are many vegans who take our product based on their personal philosophies. The cartilage source does not come into any contact with the blood-supply of the animal so it is very different than eating chicken meat or bones. Nonetheless, it is up to the individual and their level of comfort of the costs/benefits of taking our products. More info: Collagen is found exclusively in humans and animals, and therefore cannot be of a vegetarian source. As such, products containing Liquid BioCell® are not vegetarian or vegan. Liquid BioCell® is the exclusive, highly bioavailable liquid form of a patented sternal cartilage, which is derived from a by-product of humanely-treated chickens from the world’s most reputable and regulated farms located in the US and Europe. For example, the US farms are not only inspected by the FDA and USDA, but there are full-time USDA inspectors on site at all times.
Liquid BioCell® is GMO-, antibiotic-, pesticides-, and hormone-free. Ingesting our product should not be equated as consuming chicken per se. We only use a by-product of the sternal cartilage from chickens, and it reaches no blood supply or nutrients from the chicken like bones or meat does. We do not kill any chickens for our product. Collagen cannot be plant-sourced. I myself follow a vegan lifestyle, and it may help you to know that we use only a very small particle from a chicken’s sternum. Our patented process requires that it is removed away from the bone, and never reaches any blood supply so it is very different than generic collagen that is often sourced using multiple parts of an animal.”
